Standout Tracks
One of the most difficult things to do is start.
Once you do it’s relatively easy to keep going.
You just need to keep doing what you’ve already done.
That can get quite dull though so how about trying something new in addition to what you’re already doing?
Then things can become interesting.
One idea leads to the next and before you know it, you’re doing all the things you dreamed of doing.
In 2020 I decided to make music that wasn’t trying to fit with what was already out there but just to make something of my own that I would enjoy playing in DJ sets.
That may sound a little hypocritical to you.
If I wasn’t trying to make music to fit in then how could it work in my DJ sets?
Well, that’s a great question.
Since my very first release back in 2008 every time I’ve played one of my own tunes out in front of a crowd, it’s stuck out like a sore thumb compared to the other tracks in the set.
That would make me cringe and feel quite uncomfortable.
There have been a couple of times over the years though when I’ve heard back from DJs who’ve said that one of my tracks was a ‘standout moment’ in their set.
Wow.
That really changed things for me.
This set from Bonjour Ben is a great example of that.
He played my remix of the Allies For Everyone track Not Too Far at a festival and messaged me on Soundcloud to say
The track starts at 53.20 mins
It’s had quite a few plays since the recording too.
Over 77.5K now.
For over 20 years I’ve been trying to make music that fits in with my idea of acceptable.
A sound that would work on a particular label or something that sounds a bit like a particular artist.
It may have taken some time but realising that being different, being bold, being brave and being unique is what inspires me.
We all need more of this.
What can you do to make your mark?
